Its National Children’s Dental Health Month … Help your children “Defeat Monster Mouth”!!

The American Dental Association works tirelessly during the month of February to promote National Children’s Dental Health Month.  The ADA and Adams Dental Group is asking people to “Defeat Monster Mouth”! Why are we helping the ADA promote this cause? Because Adams Dental Group strives to work with our little patients and educate them and their families by offering dental health services for all ages.

This is an annual month-long health focus; however, we don’t limit our focus on kiddos or National Children’s Dental Health Month to just the month of February. This is a focus that brings together teachers, dental professionals and health care providers to work with children and their caregivers to promote the benefits of good oral health and we are proud to be involved.

Helping children’s healthy dental habits to develop an early age is important. So is learning why they should visit Dr. Roberts and his expert team regularly to help get them started down the path to have a lifetime of healthy teeth and gums.

We’d like to take a moment to highlight this year’s slogan from the ADA, “Defeat Monster Mouth” because it can help children make an association with keeping their mouth, gums and teeth healthy. We’ve included one of the posters that feature the McGrinn Twins, Flossy and Buck, Den Smiley and K-9, the dog toward the bottom of this blog post for you to print out for your kiddos to color. They are fighting to defeat Plaqster the Monster to win the battle of good oral health! Notice that it demonstrates effective ways to defeat monster mouth and maintain good dental health by brushing, flossing, and eating healthy snacks!!

Adams Dental Group: Working with our Community

Kelly, one of our wonderful hygienists, visited one of the Elementary Schools in our Kansas City, KS community for Children’s Dental Health Month. She talked with them about some things each of them can do to keep their mouth healthy. They talked about plaque and how it causes decay and cavities. They also discussed the proper techniques to use when they brush their teeth and floss!

Dental Health Services: Healthy Habits

These five steps will help you remember how to care for your mouth, teeth and gums and are super easy:

Brushing:

Even though everyone knows that brushing your teeth is a key element of their overall dental health. But, some are not aware of the correct way to brush their teeth.

Here’s a quick reminder of the correct way to brush:

  • Select a soft-bristled toothbrush; they are best to remove plaque
  • Spend at least two minutes twice a day brushing your teeth with fluoride toothpaste
  • Be thorough and tilt your toothbrush at a 45-degree angle to clean both the inner and outer surfaces of your teeth, as well as the chewing surfaces.
  • In a back-and-forth motion, be sure to use short, precise strokes and don’t forget to be gentle
  • It’s important to brush your tongue for your overall oral hygiene and this will help keep your breath fresh.
  • Tip: Setting a timer or playing a favorite song or video that lasts at least two minutes is an easy way to get this young habit started! There are also apps available to make brushing fun!

Flossing:

Make sure to clean between your teeth each day too by flossing; otherwise, you’re not cleaning 40% of your teeth’s surfaces. Bedtime is usually the best time to floss, so you can make sure all those food particles that have accumulated throughout the day have been cleared away from those hard to reach places and don’t begin to decay.

According to the ADA, here’s a quick reminder of how to floss your teeth:

  1. Pull 18 to 24 inches of dental floss from the floss dispenser.
  2. Wrap the ends of the floss around your index and middle fingers.
  3. Hold the floss tightly around each tooth in a C shape; move the floss back and forth in a push-pull motion and up and down against the side of each tooth.

Spit:

It’s better for the enamel on your teeth if you spit your toothpaste out after you brush. Just don’t rinse your mouth with water. Why? If you rinse your mouth out after brushing, it will wash away your toothpaste’s protective fluoride. You’ll want to leave the good stuff behind when you brush your teeth, so the fluoride continues to be effective. Not only does it reduce the amount of acid that the bacteria on your teeth produce, it also strengthens the enamel on your teeth. This helps reduce cavities.

Eating Healthy Snacks:

Fruits and veggies are your friends, so pick healthy snacks. Don’t forget to avoid sugary treats and remember that the worst culprits are the chewy, sour / sweet candies that kiddos love.
