Dentures can make a huge impact on your smile and overall health and well being, and whether you’re considering getting dentures or maybe know someone who has them, it’s likely that you may have some denture questions. What are the different kind of dentures, what kind of care do they require, how do they improve your smile; these are all common questions that we hope to answer for you in this blog post so you can walk away more educated and confident about dentures.
Before we dive into the nitty gritty, let’s discuss the general overview of dentures and what they are. According to the American Dental Association, dentures are “removable appliances that can replace missing teeth and help restore your smile.” Therefore, if you’ve lost your natural teeth, dentures can replace those teeth and are made to closely resemble your real teeth – restoring and improving your smile.

There are a couple varieties of dentures, depending on your need. Dentures can replace all or even just some of your teeth. Partial dentures are meant for replacing just some, but not all your teeth. These dentures will attach to any teeth that are still present and in good health within your mouth. They will rest on the gums and bone where there are missing teeth, filling in any gaps and creating a flawless-looking smile. Similarly, complete dentures, also known as conventional dentures, will cover your entire mouth, replacing all your teeth.

Dentists recommend that dentures be cleaned as soon as possible after every meal. However, keeping up with cleaning that often isn’t always possible, so aim to clean your dentures daily. You can purchase a soft denture brush to gently brush your dentures using a non-abrasive soap or denture paste. Do not use a regular toothbrush, toothpaste, or whitening bleach for dentures as they are too harsh. Dish washing liquid with a soft denture brush works great to clean your dentures, along with a water-based cleaning solution to soak them in overnight.

Dentures can be slept in, but dentists recommend that they are removed to give your mouth a chance to relax. It’s also a great time to let your dentures get clean in an overnight cleaning solution or water. Dentures should never go more than 24 hours without being cleaned, so if you do need to sleep in them, make sure you’re cleaning them during the day and giving your mouth a rest during that time instead.
Getting used to dentures in your mouth is an adjustment and with time for your mouth to get used to the new dentures, your ease of eating will improve over time. Your mouth has been trained to eat and chew a certain way for many years and introducing a new mechanism such as dentures into the mix might throw off your normal chewing pattern for a little while. The key is to practice and find the best way to chew with your dentures, and before you know it, it’ll come with ease and little thought.
Dentures typically last around 5-10 years. As your mouth changes over time, your dentures will not change, and new dentures or adjustments may be needed down the line to fit your ever-changing mouth and gums. Check in with your dentist at least once a year to get your dentures looked at to avoid any issues and make sure they are fitting properly.
